Mount Edward, Muirkirk Vineyard Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand, 2016

Mount Edward, Muirkirk Vineyard Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand, 2016

Producer Profile

There are many characters in New Zealand winemaking and one of the largest is Duncan Forsyth.

Maverick or genius, planting vines in the cold of Otago takes some nerve. These vineyards are on the edge of what is possible, the climate is so marginal. With a biodynamic approach and the reassuring chaos of a smallholding full of pigs and chickens the wines, especially the exquisite Riesling, win awards and praise worldwide proving that we should all try to be little bit different.

Viticulture

Muirkirk vineyard is situated on Felton Road in Bannockburn on a gentle north west sloping corner. The soils are predominantly dense clay loam over gravels with seams of calcium carbonate running across the vineyard. The vineyard comprises 6ha of selected pinot noir clones, mainly Dijon with some older 6 & pommard planted in 1997 and cropped at an average of 5.5 t/ha. Elevation is around 250m and rainfall approximately 400mm per annum. Farmed, under conversion, using bio gro certified organic practices.

Winemaking

Vinified in a traditional fashion using open fermenters, hand plunging, natural yeasts and 15 months in French oak. No filtration or fining.

Oak Treatment

Tasting Note

A soft and supple wine, lots of rich fruit with a good depth of flavour. Lovely acidity and fine tannins give the wine great length and structure whilst also making it very approachable on release.

Food Matching

The prefect accompaniment to seasonal game dishes.
