Giles Cooke M.W.
Wine Development Director
Having realised that a degree in history was a good training for
a life of drinking and eating, Giles immersed himself in the world
of wine, starting out with Majestic and then moving to Alliance in
Starting out on the road in Edinburgh, Giles remembers what it
was like to have to go home at lunchtime to pick up faxed orders
and answerphone messages. Since then Giles's fingers have been in
pies as various as on-trade sales, national account sales, buying,
marketing and export.
Nowadays his focus (what focus I hear people saying!?) is on
marketing, building export markets and developing the brands and
own production projects that will take Alliance forward.
A passionate champion of all things Spanish and Australian,
Giles has introduced many leading wine producers to the UK and
remains fascinated by both countries.
Winning both the Spanish Scholarship and the Australian
Scholarship on his way to gaining the WSET Diploma, Giles went on
to complete the notoriously difficult Master of Wine exams at the
Never happier than when exploring vineyards and getting his
hands dirty, Giles' studies and travel have seen him making wine in
California, Spain and Australia. A dissertation on micro
oxygenation goes some way to disproving the oft spoken myth that
Giles is all about the marketing!
Fanatical to the point of obsession about Jamón Ibérico,
Chuleton de Buey and just about any food that has had care and
passion lavished upon it, Giles loves to cook and is something of a
glory chef as his wife Pippa will attest to!
He is the father to two young girls, Issy and Sassy, so has
little time for anything other than work and family but should the
occasion ever arise where there is some spare time, Giles loves a
pint of Deuchar's IPA down the pub, a bit of sun in Mallorca, the
peace of fly fishing in a boat on a Scottish loch and, of course,
doing a spot of homework with a few bottles of great wine.
