All Angels, England

The rural backwaters of Berkshire aren’t the first place you’d expect to find a vineyard, yet it’s here that new kid on the English wine scene, Mark Darley and his family have chosen to plant 3 hectares of classic sparkling varieties as well as Pinot Gris.

Enborne Vineyards, located in the village of the same name, was planted with the intention of producing exceptional English sparkling wine, set apart due to their distinctive terroir and a serendipitous collaboration with respected winemaker, Emma Rice from Hattingley Valley. Planted in 2010 (after the land was almost set aside as an Alpaca farm!), the vision began to take shape. The inspiration for All Angels coming from the local 12th century parish church of St Michael & All Angels. The inaugural 2014 vintage has already started to make some noise, and there’s no doubt that this is a producer to follow.

Viticulture

Vineyards are planted on well-drained south facing slopes, composed of shallow, sandy loam over gravel, sand and flint deposits.

Winemaking

Grapes were harvested in October; gentle pressing to extract only the best quality juice, followed by temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel. The Chardonnay component goes through malo-lactic fermentation (3% in barrel, the remainder in tank). After lees ageing in bottle the wine received a light dosage.
