Domaine Forey, Côte de Nuits

Domaine Forey is a small but outstanding domaine created in 1840 by the great-grandfather of current owner and winemaker, Régis Forey.

Until 2001, the Forey's tended the vines and produced the wine of well-known La Romanée grand cru appellation in a metayage (sharecropping) agreement with the Liger-Belair family which entitled them to 50% of the crop which they sold as bulk to Beaune and Nuits negociants.

However, Régis revolutionised the domaine when he joined, buying vineyard parcels in Echézeaux and some Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Gaudichots and so Domaine Forey now have vineyards in Vosne Romanée, Morey-Saint-Denis, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Flagey Echezeaux and Vougeot.

Régis advocates a minimal use of herbicides and pesticides and retains grass swards in the more humid blocks to create competition and a more diverse microclimate.

The practise of total destemming is used as well as larger 500 litre casks for aging the wines which Régis believes gives better integration of the oak into the wine.

This is a winemaker with Pinot Noir in his veins - he sleeps, breathes and dreams Nuits St Georges!
