Carvalhas, Tinta Francisca, Duoro, Portugal, 2013
Real Companhia Velha is the oldest wine company in Portugal, having recently celebrated 260 years of uninterrupted port production.
Founded in 1756 by the King of Portugal, this company represents some of the finest Quintas in the Douro. Old but not out of touch, they have been able to preserve and honour the traditional winemaking while investing in the future with constant modernisation and experimentation in their vineyards.
Quinta das Carvalhas is the most emblematic and spectacular property in the Douro Valley. Written references regarding this magnificent vineyard can be traced back to 1759. Enjoying a prominent position on the left bank of the Douro river, in Pinhão, the estate covers the entire hillside facing the Douro river and occupies part of the slopes of the right bank of the tributary Torto river. Tinta Francisca is now a widely grown grape variety within the Douro’s oldest vines. After conducting a profound study, they have developed a recovery program in order to produce a high quality wine from this noble variety that was almost at the point of extinction not too long ago. Recognised for its low levesl of yield.
Fermentation occurs in small stainless steel vats at a controlled low temperature. The wine then ages in used French Oak barriques for a period of 12 months.

Fresh and intense with a aromatic notes of wild berries and light green nuances, creating a notable complexity and a very original style. Intense in flavour, yet very elegant; finishing long, fresh and smooth.
An ideal partner for white meat dishes and white truffle.

Concentrated cherry and fresh-crushed plum flavors are zesty, filled with juniper berry notes. Cedary accents show midpalate, leading to a lithe finish of forest floor. Drink now through 2019. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,000 cases made.90 Points, KM, Aug 2016.
