Producer Profile
Pioneers of the Waipara Valley the Sherwood family have been working this land for over 30 years.
Waipara is a region with great potential that is still to be realised fully, with greater extremes of frost and warmth than its close neighbours, Marlborough and Nelson. Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris are a special focus here with a fresh regional style of their own. Perfect counterpoints to some of the more famous regions of NZ.
Viticulture
Stoney Range Sauvignon Blanc was produced from grapes grown in the heart of the Waipara Valley on the Stirling, Church Road and Georges Road vineyards. The extended growing season of warm, fine days and cool nights ensured the fruit was harvested in peak condition.
Winemaking
Various yeast strains including indigenous are used to complete fermentation over 21 days, then left on yeast lees for two months, with weekly mixing of the lees and juice. Once the desired amount of texture had developed in the wine it was fined with milk to reduce the phenolics. Once all the various portions of Sauvignon Blanc were ready, the blending began which was the final task in making the Stoney Range style.Up to 40 different portions are tasted and evaluated with various blends put together tasted and tweaked again. Only when the Winemakers are happy that they have achieved the desired style in the wine, it is prepared for bottling.
