Argentina
Argentina 2017, small but perfectly
formed…
Normal service was resumed in Mendoza in 2017. Following the
oddly atypical wet vintage of 2016, when it rained and rained, 2017
was a much more traditional, dry year. A year of quality, if
not volume.
Spring frosts put paid to a large flowering, but the following
warm, dry conditions over the summer meant the fruit was allowed to
reach full maturity with excellent concentration. This is a
vintage that will be remembered for high quality, with the wine
showing remarkable aromas, colour and a good tannins, giving good
ageing potential.
Like the 2017 vintage, our Argentine portfolio is small, but
perfectly formed. We are immensely proud to represent two of the
very top producers in Argentina, both of whom look to the future
and are committed to the concept of "terroir" specific wines.
In 2016, Jose Zuccardi was deservedly awarded the IWC Lifetime
Achievement Award and, with his son Sebastian now at the reins, and
the new winery in the Uco Valley fully operational, the quality is
going from strength to strength. There is no complacency at
Zuccardi and Sebastian continues to push forward, with an admirable
determination to show the best expression of his grapes on the
right sites and demonstrates the greatness that their country can
offer.
At Vina Cobos, the magical touch of Paul Hobbs, one of the
world's most respected winemakers shines through. Paul's
distinctive, precision winemaking coupled with his talent for
seeking out the best sites, and his low interventionist philosophy,
means that these wines are increasingly hitting the top scores with
Parker, Suckling and others. Some of these wines are made in
very small quantities and we are lucky to be able to offer them to
you. They are not to be missed.
