The new owners David and Chris have looked to breathe new life into this site. A veteran of the English wine scene, having been planted over 30 years ago, it was until recently more campsite than vineyard. It has been rescued from this ignominy, the campsite swept away and 24,000 vines newly planted. Working the land themselves, managing the winemaking and doing their own bottling, it is quite clear this is more than just another hobby business. This is an obsession. Their ambition is clear and the future looks very exciting.
Hidden Spring Vineyard is south facing gently sloping with clay on sand. Vines are Vertical Shoot Position trained. Whilst they are not organic they do have a minimal intervention approach. Altitude is between 65 and 78m above sea level and they are located on the edge of the High Weald area of natural beauty.
Crushed destemmed grapes are gently pressed in a pneumatic bladder press, fermented at low temperature to retain varietal character and volatile aromas. Aged on lees for 7 months before sterile filtration and bottling. Cold stabilised over the winter.
No oak treatment.
A nicely balanced fine English wine with refreshing acidity, showing grapefruit, nettle and lime zest aromas. Vines Cross is light, fresh and dry with a hint of passion fruit on the palate and a lingering finish.
