Real Companhia Velha, Duoro

Over 260 years of uninterrupted production.

Real Companhia Velha is the oldest and most emblematic wine company in Portugal, having recently celebrated over 260 years of existence and uninterrupted activity in the production of Port Wine. Founded in 1756 by the Royal Charter of D. José I, King of Portugal, the importance of this Ex-Majestic Company was seen as being a valuable service to the community.

At some of best Quintas in the Douro, they have been able to preserve and honour the tradition of winemaking while investing in the future, with  constant modernisation and experimentation at their vineyards.

  • Delaforce

Over the years, Delaforce has developed a reputation for its outstanding blending and ageing skills which express themselves in the company's wines and ports, in particular the renowned aged tawny ports, His Eminence's Choice and Curious & Ancient. Both brands were originally created in the 1930's.

  • Porca de Murça

Celebrating 90 years in 2018, this is one of the Duoro's leading brands. The brand originated from a folktale from the small village of Vila de Murça, in the Douro Valley. It is said that there was a mighty female boar living in the woods near the village that was responsible for the destruction of the fields and its plantations. Having been, for many years, a constant torment to the people of the village they one day decided to invite the best hunters of the region to hunt down the boar until the boar was slain. A statue was erected and placed in the centre of the village as a tribute to this monstrous animal, making it an icon of the village and region.

  • Quinta das Carvalhas

Quinta das Carvalhas is one of the most emblematic and spectacular properties in the Douro Valley. Written references regarding this magnificent vineyard can be traced back to 1759. Enjoying a prominent position on the left bank of the Douro river, in Pinhão, the estate covers the entire hillside facing the Douro river and occupies part of the slopes of the right bank of the tributary Torto river. Carvalhas' Old Vines, are a post-phylloxera plantation, which have reached the respectful age of a century old.

  •  Quinta de Cidrô

Quinta de Cidrô is located in São João da Pesqueira, one of the most highly regarded areas of the Douro Valley. Throughout the last 20 years, Cidrô has been transformed into an experimental-model vineyard for the entire region. Acquired in 1972, the Quinta has been subject to a vast reconversion program, which includes the Palace and the vineyard, planting the vines on a vertical plantation system on a massive scale. In the most privileged location, international varieties perform equally well as the local grapes. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, and the adaptable Cabernet Sauvignon are some of the varieties that express their best qualities when vinified by the extensive winemaking know-how present at the Company.

  •  Quinta do Casal da Granja
Real Companhia Velha owns the beautiful Quinta do Casal da Granja, a 160 ha vineyard located by the small village of Granja de Alijó. This high altitude (600m) plateau is also home to our modern winery. The brand Grandjó was created through a fusion of both words: Granja and Alijó, and it celebrated its one hundredth year aniversary in 2012, becoming the company's oldest active brand. The Quinta, located on a plateau well above the the Douro, benefits from cool breezes which optimise the potential for white wine production. Within the most diverse varieties, Moscatel Galego is the most widely planted. White grapes are picked and fermented with utmost care in order to provide the refreshing and aromatic wines the region is known to produce.
