Weingut Max Ferdinand Richter, Mülheimer Helenenkloster Riesling Spätlese, Qmp, Mosel, Germany, 2018
Producer Profile
For 300 years, the Richter family has owned and farmed vineyards in the central Mosel area.
Working 16ha of vines, they have consistently produced some of the region’s best Rieslings. The deep valley, cut through the landscape by the Mosel river, has some of the wine world’s most impressive yet precipitously sloping vineyards. Using knowledge gathered over generations, the Richters fastidiously work the terraces, focusing on low yields, using natural fertilizers and cultivating in harmony with the local geology. Selective hand-picking, meticulous work in the cellar, and the use of 960 litre old oak Moselle fuders (foudres) result in single vineyard cuvées that offer superb drinking but also great ageing potential.
Viticulture
Crafted as a true rarity, this Monopoly site belongs exclusively to the Max Ferd. Richter estate and is planted with 100% Riesling. Nestled on a south‑west–facing slope of barely two acres, the vineyard benefits from exceptional exposure and deep, freshly weathered clay‑slate soils that deliver remarkable intensity and finesse. The vines, planted in 1964, draw on decades of maturity to produce fruit of outstanding concentration and purity. Yet the story of this site stretches far deeper into history. First documented on 30 April 1245, the vineyard was originally dedicated by the Count of Veldenz to the nearby convent, from which it proudly takes its name: Helenenkloster—St Helene’s Convent. Today, it stands as a singular expression of heritage, terroir and craftsmanship, offering Riesling of striking elegance and provenance.
Winemaking
Hand‑harvested in mid‑October 2018, the grapes were selected at an impressive 96° Oechsle, reaching true Auslese quality. Only perfectly ripe and healthy fruit made the cut, ensuring exceptional purity and richness. Fermentation took place under precise temperature control in traditional old oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop depth, finesse and an unmistakable sense of place. Bottling followed in August, capturing the wine at its optimum moment and preserving its expressive character and long‑lasting elegance.
Tasting Note
It reveals a beautifully expressive, fruit‑laden bouquet, brimming with vineyard peach, pineapple, fragrant herbs and subtle creamy nuances. On the palate, the wine is delicately juicy and vibrantly fruity, carrying a gentle exotic charm through a long, playful and elegant finish. As the aftertaste unfolds, brighter orchard‑fruit notes emerge, adding freshness and completing the pleasure of this pristine and beautifully sweet wine.
