Domaine Justin Girardin, Maranges Rouge Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy, France, 2020

Producer Profile
Domaine Justin Girardin is very much a family affair, with a winemaking heritage that stretches back to the beginning of the 19th Century. Jacques (brother of Vincent) handed over the running of the 17ha family domaine to his son Justin in 2012. Whilst not being officially certified, Justin uses many organic techniques, as he is passionate about producing wines that express terroir. The results are superbly perfumed, multi-layered wines.

Viticulture
The grapes are sourced from the Aubuzes climat in Maranges, located on the southern edge of the Santenay vineyard. The vines, averaging 50 years of age, are planted on clay-limestone soils rich in pebbles and gravels, with a south-western exposure on gently sloping hillsides. The vineyard practices are sustainable, focusing on manual harvesting and minimal intervention to express the unique terroir.
Winemaking
The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir. Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and subjected to a cold maceration at 12°C for 5–7 days to extract primary aromas. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, followed by a smooth extraction process to respect the grape variety, terroir, and vintage. The wine undergoes fermentation for approximately 20 days, with gentle extraction methods.
Tasting Note
Ripe red fruits, such as raspberry and cherry, complemented by subtle floral notes and a hint of oak spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with fine tannins, balanced acidity, and a mineral-driven finish, indicating excellent ageing potential.
