Producer Profile

Olivier Humbrecht MW holds the notable achievement of being the first French national to earn the title of Master of Wine in 1989.

From a winemaking lineage that dates back to 1620, Olivier is the twelfth generation of his family working in viticulture. In 1959, his parents, Léonard Humbrecht and Geneviève Zind, merged their family vineyards to establish Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and Olivier assumed responsibility for the estate's winemaking in 1989, the same year he achieved his Master of Wine qualification. Under his guidance, Olivier's domaine has become renowned for its commitment to biodynamic viticulture, a practice he adopted in the early 1990s. He employs non-interventionist winemaking techniques, allowing the unique terroirs of Alsace to express themselves fully in the wines, and his dedication to quality and innovation in winemaking has earned him international acclaim, solidifying his status as a leading figure in the world of wine.

Viticulture

This wine originates from the gravelly and sandy loam soils left by the glaciers and the river Fecht running down the Munster Valley. They recently saw that Pinot-Gris was more resistant to both winter and spring frost, but it appears that it is a little more resistant to drought. The vines do turn yellow as fast as Riesling or Gewurztraminer, but the vines are able to ripen the grapes better, with less crop loss in proportion as well. Pinot-Gris is the grape that will eventually rot the fastest and earlier, so it is crucial to harvest it at the right moment. This is always the first vineyard harvested on the domaine.

Tasting Note

Pale yellow bright colour. The nose is precise and fresh, showing white fruits (pears, apples) and hints of honey. The palate is elegant, medium power with a surprising juicy acidity. The mouthfeel shows a welcoming lightness but is supported by good density and a very dry finish. It almost feels like a dry Riesling! Open, easy to drink today, it should offer some nice evolution in the years to come.

Food Matching

Pairs well with a variety of dishes, particularly those with rich, savoury, or spicy flavors. Fish, especially smoked fish or those with a rich sauce, as well as dishes with Thai or Chinese influences.
