Van Loggerenberg, Geronimo Cinsault, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2023

Viticulture
The wine is made from an old vine vineyard planted on the farm Rustenhof in the Firgrove area. The vineyard is planted with bush vines and dryland farmed. The soils are decomposed granite with under laying sandstone which gives this wine its elegance and finesse.
Winemaking
The grapes were 60% whole bunch fermented. All grapes were left to ferment naturally with one punch down performed daily. The wines underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel. The various barrels were blended after 9 months in old French oak barrels and bottled right after. The Cinsaut is bottled earlier than our other red wines to maintain the crunchy fruit vibrancy unique to Cinsaut. No enzymes or commercial yeast was used in making the wines.
Tasting Note
Crafted from a 1975 vineyard block in Firgrove, this vintage of Geronimo captures the coastal essence with its briney, acid-driven energy and expressive aromatics. Notes of red cherry, pomegranate, and plum are layered with Campari spice, clove, and a whisper of spearmint and rose. The palate is racy and vibrant, showcasing generous fruit, savoury yet fine-grained tannins, and a zippy, lemon-like acidity. The 60% whole bunch fermentation lends a touch of peppery lift and structure, while the fynbos undertone grounds it firmly in its Cape identity.
