Domaine Guiberteau, Saumur Rouge, Loire, France (150cl.), 2023
Producer Profile
Domaine Guiberteau is a prestigious family-owned vineyard nestled in the heart of the Saumur area.
Founded in the early 1900s by Clément Manguin, and expanded by Robert Guiberteau with the acquisition of the iconic Clos des Carmes in 1954, the estate blends rich heritage with exceptional winemaking expertise. Since 1996, under the visionary leadership of Romain Guiberteau, the domaine has embraced a bold commitment to quality over quantity. Guided by the expertise of renowned winemaker Nady Foucault from Clos Rougeard, Domaine Guiberteau has pioneered organic farming practices and proudly achieved official organic certification in 2007. The result is a range of wines crafted with passion, tradition, and sustainable innovation – a true expression of the modern-day Loire Valley terroir.
Viticulture
The wine is sourced from three hillside parcels near Chacé and Brézé in Saumur, planted on silt-and-sand topsoils above limestone bedrock. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, with old vines and low-intervention techniques to express terroir.
Winemaking
Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented with native yeasts in wooden vats or concrete tanks. After around 18–24 months' maturation in one- to two-year-old oak barrels, the wine is blended and further aged in stainless steel.
Tasting Note
This wine offers vibrant red-berry aromas—raspberry, cherry, and bramble—balanced by earthy and savoury undertones with a hint of spice. On the palate it is elegant and medium-bodied, showing silky tannins, lively acidity, and a mineral-tinged finish perfect for early drinking yet suitable for ageing
Food matching
Pairs beautifully with gamey terrines, roast pork or white meats, grilled vegetables, charcuterie, and meaty fish dishes.
