Bodegas Pisuerga, Spain

Bodegas Pisuerga’s singular aim is to produce exquisite, classically styled Verdejo from organically certified vineyards in and around their winery in La Seca, at the very heart of Rueda.

One of the region’s oldest wineries, they’re committed to the natural and social environment, striving to ensure the soils remain vital to produce the best possible grapes. The use of cover crops and organic manure builds soil diversity and reduces the risk of disease, which in turn leads to a vigilant but hands-off approach amongst the growers. Vinification is in the hands of their experienced team at their state-of-the-art winery in La Seca, where their experience of the region and close partnership between the oenologist and winemaker, enables them to capture the ultimate expression of Organic Rueda Verdejo.

Viticulture

The flat, high plateau of Rueda sits at 600-700m above sea level, with small pebbles stretching to the horizon. Soils are poor, and well-drained, with limestone and areas of sand. A continental climate with harsh, cold winters and warm summers, provides grapes with even ripening conditions. Vines are trained on a combination of older goblet-trained and younger trellised vineyards in and around the village of La Seca, all organically certified and following a ‘green philosophy’ which extends throughout every aspect of production, from the vineyard to the winery.

Winemaking

Grapes are harvested in the cool of the night to retain their fresh fruit expression and vibrant acidity. Certified organic, with vinification, carried out so the wine is suitable for vegans. Fermentation in stainless steel with 3 months lees ageing to enhance the texture.
