Roebuck Estates, Blanc De Blancs, Sussex, England, 2019
Producer Profile
Roebuck Estates adopt a single-minded approach, using only the finest quality estate-grown grapes from exceptional vineyard sites to create award-winning wines from classic Champagne varieties.
Located close to the historic market town of Petworth in West Sussex, Roebuck Estates was established in 2013 by two Brits, Mike Smith and John Ball, whose love of wine, long-standing friendship and belief in the potential of English wine caused them to spend several years spent searching for the perfect vineyard plots.
Viticulture
The 2019 growing season got off to an excellent start, with budburst occurring in early April and successfully avoiding any damaging spring frosts. Moderately warm conditions at the end of June encouraged a successful flowering period and even fruit set across the vineyard. Favourable weather throughout August supported steady fruit development, while the cooler temperatures of September and October helped to create fruit of exceptional complexity, complemented by beautifully balanced acidity and elegance.
Winemaking
Only made in exceptional years, the 2019 Blanc de Blancs is crafted from the finest Chardonnay grapes, carefully selected and harvested by hand. Partial fermentation in old Burgundian oak barrels followed by extended bottle ageing for a minimum of five years imparts depth, richness and complexity on this exquisite wine.
Tasting Note
A delicate and refined sparkling wine with delightful notes of ripe citrus and stone fruits layered with a hint of white flowers and toasted hazelnuts leading to a long, beautifully balanced finish.
Food matching
Perfect with fresh oysters, seared scallops, grilled lobster or delicate white fish dishes. Its elegant citrus character and fine mousse also pair beautifully with soft-ripened cheeses and light poultry dishes.
