Tegernseerhof, Grüner Veltliner Smaragd, Bergdistel, Dürnstein, Wachau, Austria, 2023

Producer Profile
Tegernseerhof has a history that dates back over 1,000 years, with 25 hectares of vineyards located on the finest slopes of the picturesque Wachau region in Austria, formed by the meandering Danube River.
Today the estate is owned and run by Martin Mittelbach, whose family have been managing Tegernseerhof for 5 generations. Inspired by ancient winemaking traditions, Martin is passionate about producing the finest expressions of vineyard and grape variety, whether Grüner Veltliner or Riesling, each wine has its own unique personality.
Viticulture
Grapes are sustainably grown across steep, terraced plots in Dürnstein and Weissenkirchen, on primary rock (gneiss) and loess soils. The estate follows eco-conscious farming to reflect the unique terroir.
Winemaking
Upon arrival at the estate, the grapes undergo whole‑cluster pressing after a gentle 6–36‑hour maceration on skins to extract aromatics and texture. Fermentation proceeds slowly over one to two months with indigenous yeasts in temperature‑controlled stainless steel tanks, occasionally undergoing natural malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged on fine lees for 6–9 months, enhancing mouthfeel and depth while preserving freshness.
Tasting Note
Aromas of mango, pineapple, blossom honey and a citrusy orange touch. The palate is juicy and tightly woven, with white stone fruit and herbal savouriness, finishing persistent and versatile.
Food Matching
Wienerschnitzel or tea-smoked duck, creamy pasta or risotto with herbs.
