Tegernseerhof
Today the estate is owned and run by Martin Mittelbach, whose family have been managing Tegernseerhof for five generations. Inspired by ancient winemaking traditions, Martin is passionate about producing the finest expressions of vineyard and grape variety; whether Grüner Veltliner or Riesling, each wine has its own unique personality.
Viticulture
Viticulture at Tegernseerhof is shaped by the Wachau’s dramatic landscape, where steep stone terraces carved into primary‑rock slopes demand meticulous, labour‑intensive work. These terraces, composed of gneiss and weathered bedrock, create naturally low‑vigour conditions that concentrate flavour and enhance the region’s signature mineral tension. The vineyards benefit from the interplay of warm Pannonian influences and cool Danube breezes, helping maintain freshness and aromatic precision.
Winemaking
Tegernseerhof blends centuries‑old tradition with a modern commitment to purity and site expression. Grapes are typically whole‑bunch pressed to preserve delicacy and aromatic clarity, followed by cool fermentations that often take place in stainless steel to highlight the precision of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. Some parcels may ferment or mature in large neutral oak, adding subtle texture without masking terroir. Lees ageing is used judiciously to build depth and structure while maintaining the estate’s hallmark finesse. Throughout the process, intervention is kept minimal, ensuring that each wine reflects the character of its vineyard rather than the hand of the winemaker.
