Pierre Gaillard, Côte-Rôtie, Malleval, Saint Joseph, Rhône, France, 2023

Producer Profile
Pierre Gaillard continues to produce some of the most stunning wines from his 25ha domaine near Malleval.
Handling the Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne and Syrah with the same gifted care, he offers a very fine and wide range of wines. We are only importing a limited selection from his superlative collection. When he is not busy in the Northern Rhône, he is helping his daughters, Jeanne in Crozes Hermitage and Elise in Banyuls, whilst even finding time to run a small estate in Faugères.
Viticulture
Crafted from a blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier, co-fermented to enhance aromatic complexity. The grapes are sourced from steep, terraced vineyards in Ampuis, Tupin, and Semons, with soils ranging from schist to gneiss.
Winemaking
The wine undergoes full destemming, cold pre-fermentation maceration, and fermentation at controlled temperatures. It is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (30% new), allowing for integration and complexity.
Tasting Note
This expressive Côte-Rôtie presents aromas of blackberry, cassis, and violet, complemented by hints of black pepper, smoked meat, and olive tapenade. The palate is elegant and structured, with silky tannins and a long, harmonious finish.
Food Matching
Grilled lamb chops, duck confit, or pheasant in truffle sauce. Also complements wild mushroom dishes.
