Bodegas Dominio de Cair, Tierras de Cair, Ribera del Duero, Spain, 2020

Producer Profile
The Luis Cañas Family has uncovered a remarkable gem in the small town of La Aguilera, nestled within the prestigious DO Ribera del Duero.
This authentic and rustic land offers a refreshing departure from the conventional—a unique landscape that stands out in one of the most exciting and celebrated wine regions of Spain. Here, vineyards blend harmoniously with surrounding forests at nearly 900 meters above sea level, where each plot is intimate, rarely exceeding half a hectare. The average age of our vines is approximately 45 years, with many venerable plants ranging between 50 and 100 years old—each contributing depth, complexity, and character to the grapes they bear. This is truly an exceptional terroir, where the wines reflect the soul and authenticity of the land itself—crafted with passion, tradition, and a profound respect for nature.
Viticulture
Vineyards over 75 years old, located in La Aguilera and Quintana del Pidio, sit at altitudes between 820 and 850 meters. The gravelly soils impose natural limitations on vine growth, creating ideal conditions for producing grapes of exceptional quality.
Winemaking
Harvested by hand into 11 kg boxes, the grapes undergo a meticulous double sorting process. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in French oak barrels. The wine is then bottle-aged for a minimum of 18 months before release.
Tasting Note
Deep cherry red with high intensity. Remarkably complex and persistent, the wine showcases prominent black fruit aromas complemented by balsamic undertones—hallmarks of old-vine Tempranillo from this region. Its depth and nuance are enhanced by the varied soils of the carefully selected small plots—clay-limestone, sandstone, and gravel—which impart distinct minerality and volume. The palate is broad and enduring, with balsamic notes lending freshness and refined elegance to the finish.
