Domaine Vielle Julienne, Ceci est un flacon du Vin de France, Côtes du Rhône, France, 2022

Producer Profile
Despite our already large portfolio of Châteauneuf estates, we did not hesitate when we had the opportunity to add Jean-Paul Daumen’s wines to our offering. These are very serious wines with a class coveted by many other producers.
With 10 hectares of vines at the very northern part of Châteauneuf du Pape and 5 hectares of Côtes du Rhône on the Lieu Dit Clavin, they are never the blockbusters produced by so many during the past decade, Vieille Julienne wines are completely unique and this is why they are so sought after!
Viticulture
This cuvée draws from select parcels located outside the strict boundaries of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation or from younger vines, enabling the estate to explore a different expression of terroir. The same biodynamic principles used in the estate’s flagship vineyards are applied here, with an emphasis on vine health, soil vitality, and minimal intervention. Yields are kept low, and all grapes are harvested by hand. The estate’s holistic vineyard management ensures that even their Vin de France cuvées reflect the same level of care and terroir authenticity as their classified wines. The result is a vibrant, terroir-driven wine made without the constraints of appellation rules.
Winemaking
In keeping with its Vin de France classification, the winemaking here is more experimental and instinctive. Fermentation is spontaneous using native yeasts, and the use of whole bunches may vary depending on vintage and desired style. Fermentation typically takes place in concrete or stainless steel vats to preserve purity and freshness. A short to moderate maceration allows for bright fruit extraction without excessive tannin. The wine is aged in neutral containers—such as large oak foudres or concrete—to maintain a fresh, unmasked fruit character. Bottled without fining or filtration, this wine emphasizes a raw, unpolished authenticity true to the domaine’s natural style.
Tasting Note
“Ceci est un flacon” is a distinctive, free-spirited wine from Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, made under the Vin de France label, allowing more freedom in terms of grape variety and winemaking style. The wine presents a vibrant ruby hue with expressive aromatics that leap from the glass—red cherries, wild strawberries, dried herbs, and subtle floral notes of violets and rose petals. Hints of crushed peppercorn and earthy spice add layers of intrigue. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, juicy, and energetic. Fresh red fruits dominate, supported by brisk acidity and fine-grained tannins. The structure is supple and lively, offering a more playful, accessible take compared to the domaine’s structured Châteauneuf du Pape wines. The finish is clean and slightly savoury, showcasing balance and drinkability with a natural elegance. A wine full of personality, charm, and freedom of expression.
