Domaine de la Vieille Julienne
These are very serious wines in a class coveted by many other producers. With 10ha of vines at the very northern part of Châteauneuf du Pape and 5ha of Côtes du Rhône on the Lieu Dit Clavin, Vieille Julienne wines are far from the blockbusters produced by so many in the region during the past decade; they are completely unique, which explains why they are so sought after!
Viticulture
The vineyards of Domaine de la Vieille Julienne are worked with profound respect for the land, with soils ranging from Miocene sands and red clays to limestone, quartz and granite gravels. Vine age is exceptionally high, with many parcels averaging over 80 years old, and all harvesting is carried out by hand to ensure stringent selection. The estate has been certified biodynamic by Demeter, with biodynamic farming embraced since the late 1990s. Extreme attention is paid to natural balance, low yields and complantation, preserving biodiversity and traditional Rhône field blends within individual parcels
Winemaking
Winemaking at Domaine de la Vieille Julienne remains entirely traditional and low‑intervention. Fermentations are carried out using indigenous yeasts, with no additives, and proceed slowly to allow full expression of vintage and site. Following long, gentle macerations, the wines are matured in large, neutral foudres before extended élevage of around 18 months. Bottling is completed without fining or filtration, resulting in wines of depth, clarity and longevity that faithfully reflect both terroir and season.
