Domaine du Clos Frantin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Murots, Burgundy, France, 2022
Producer Profile
Domaine du Clos Frantin is Albert Bichot's historic estate in Nuits-Saint-Georges, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits.
The 13.2-hectare domaine owns an exceptional collection of vineyards across some of Burgundy’s most prestigious appellations, including 3.9 hectares of Premier and Grand Cru sites such as Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Malconsorts, Richebourg, Grands-Echezeaux, Echezeaux and Clos de Vougeot. The vineyards have been certified organic, with compost and ploughing replacing herbicides and chemical fertilisers. Low yields, careful vineyard work and gentle winemaking allow Pinot Noir to express the character and subtle differences of each Côte de Nuits terroir.
Viticulture
Domaine du Clos Frantin's Les Murots vineyard extends across 3.71 hectares in the renowned Gevrey-Chambertin appellation of the Côte de Nuits. The 35 to 40-year-old Pinot Noir vines are planted in very gravelly calcareous clay soils formed from scree and gravel deposits carried from the Lavaux valley. This free-draining terroir promotes optimal ripening and contributes to the concentration and character of the fruit.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted at the winery before undergoing fermentative maceration in temperature-controlled wooden vats for 18 to 21 days. This traditional approach allows for gentle extraction of colour, flavour and tannin, preserving the richness and complexity of the Pinot Noir while maintaining balance and finesse. Matured in French oak barrels for 14 to 16 months, with 25% to 35% new oak. This ageing regime adds texture, spice and complexity while supporting the wine's structure and ageing potential
Tasting Note
Rich and captivating, this Gevrey-Chambertin reveals aromas of very ripe raspberry, blackcurrant and dark berry fruits layered with hints of spice and well-integrated oak. Velvety and generous on the palate, it combines depth of fruit with refined structure and balance. The long finish echoes the ripe fruit character, with complexity that develops beautifully over time.
Food matching
Outstanding with roast venison, beef Wellington, wild mushroom dishes and mature Époisses or Comté cheese.
