Domaine Guiberteau, Saumur Champigny, , Breze, Loire, France, 2022
Producer Profile
Domaine Guiberteau is a prestigious family-owned vineyard nestled in the heart of the Saumur area.
Founded in the early 1900s by Clément Manguin, and expanded by Robert Guiberteau with the acquisition of the iconic Clos des Carmes in 1954, the estate blends rich heritage with exceptional winemaking expertise. Since 1996, under the visionary leadership of Romain Guiberteau, the domaine has embraced a bold commitment to quality over quantity. Guided by the expertise of renowned winemaker Nady Foucault from Clos Rougeard, Domaine Guiberteau has pioneered organic farming practices and proudly achieved official organic certification in 2007. The result is a range of wines crafted with passion, tradition, and sustainable innovation – a true expression of the modern-day Loire Valley terroir.
Viticulture
The grapes for Domaine Guiberteau's Saumur Champigny are sourced from organically certified vineyards in the Saumur area, including sites around Montreuil-Bellay, Brézé and Bizay. Cabernet Franc is planted on clay-limestone and tuffeau-rich soils, which provide excellent drainage while contributing the freshness, purity and characteristic mineral edge found in the finished wine. The estate has been farmed organically since the early 2000s and achieved official organic certification in 2007. Vineyard management focuses on sustainability, biodiversity and minimal intervention, with vine ages ranging from around 7 to 80 years old.
Winemaking
Domaine Guiberteau follows a low-intervention winemaking philosophy designed to express the character of the fruit and terroir as clearly as possible. The Cabernet Franc grapes are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats, allowing for a natural and gentle extraction. Following fermentation, the wine is matured in a combination of stainless steel vessels and large oak vats or foudres, with minimal use of new oak to preserve freshness, purity of fruit and site expression. The result is a refined and elegant Saumur Champigny with vibrant fruit, fine tannins and a strong sense of place.
Tasting Note
Pure and expressive Cabernet Franc with aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, layered with floral notes, subtle herbs and a touch of graphite. The palate is fresh and finely structured, showing bright red fruit, polished tannins, vibrant acidity and a lingering mineral finish.
Food matching
Excellent with roast lamb, duck breast, charcuterie, grilled vegetables, herb-roasted chicken or mushroom dishes. Its bright acidity and fine tannins also pair beautifully with tomato-based recipes.
