Château Gloria, St-Julien, Bordeaux, France, 2018
Viticulture
Henri Martin’s greatest achievement was undeniably the creation of Château Gloria. Vine by vine and parcel by parcel, he patiently and thoughtfully negotiated with fellow proprietors across Saint-Julien, assembling a mosaic of superb “cru classé” plots set upon the famed Günzian gravel. These acquisitions would ultimately form the estate known today as Château Gloria. The vineyards, averaging 40 years of age, are spread across three key zones: the heart of Beychevelle, the western sector, and the northern reaches of the appellation.
Winemaking
Château Gloria underwent major modernisation in 1991. The winery was completely refurbished and fitted with a conveyor system from the grape hopper, a state‑of‑the‑art de‑stemmer designed to keep berries intact, new glazed stainless‑steel temperature‑controlled vats, and a vacuum‑evaporation system to concentrate the must. A second ageing cellar was added in 2000, increasing total capacity to 2,000 barrels. The wine is matured for 14 months in cask, with around 40% of the barrels renewed each year, including 25% new oak.
Tasting Note
It reveals a composed and inviting profile from the first impression, unfurling notes of dark forest fruits, subtle wild‑herb nuances, polished wood spice and a hint of cured leaf, giving the fragrance a sense of quiet sophistication. On the palate, it offers succulent, dark‑toned fruit with a mineral lift, carried by measured depth and balanced freshness, flowing into a precise, streamlined finish that underscores the wine’s assurance and finely knit structure.
