Château Branas Grand Poujeaux

Château Branas Grand Poujeaux is a leading estate in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, purchased by Justin Onclin in 2002 with the ambition of unlocking the full potential of its exceptional terroir.

Situated on the renowned Grand Poujeaux plateau between the celebrated châteaux of Poujeaux and Chasse-Spleen, the estate has earned recognition for producing wines that combine maturity, power and concentration with precision, elegance and finesse. Today, the vineyard team focuses on expressing the individuality of each parcel while crafting wines that reflect the unique character of this highly regarded yet discreet Médoc appellation.

Viticulture

The estate is centred on 17 hectares of vineyards located on the eastern side of Moulis-en-Médoc, planted on deep Günz gravel soils over limestone subsoils similar to those found in some of the finest terroirs of Pauillac and Margaux. The vineyard is divided into individual parcels, each managed according to its soil type, vine age and grape variety. Plantings comprise approximately 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. The gravelly soils provide excellent drainage and encourage deep root systems, enhancing vineyard resilience and terroir expression. Since 2018, the estate has been certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) Level III, the highest level of environmental certification in France.

Winemaking

Viticulture is carried out with a meticulous parcel-by-parcel approach, favouring sustainable vineyard practices and optimal fruit maturity. Grapes are harvested by hand into small crates and undergo rigorous sorting before being transferred by gravity into temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats. Gentle extraction techniques are employed to preserve finesse and aromatics. Following alcoholic fermentation, the wines complete malolactic fermentation in barrel. Maturation lasts approximately 15–18 months, with the proportion of new oak tailored to each vintage. Selected lots may also be aged in amphorae, contributing additional complexity and purity before bottling at the estate.
