Produttori di Manduria, Madrigale Primitivo di Manduria, Dolce Naturale DOCG, Puglia, Italy (37.5cl), 2023
Producer Profile
In the heel of Italy, Manduria is considered the birthplace of the native Primitivo grape and was officially recognised as such in the 1970s when a DOC was created for the region.
Produttori di Manduria had been making wines for 40 years by then, unashamedly proud of their deep affection for Primitivo. Producer of one of Puglia’s few DOCGs, as well as making high-quality examples of Puglia’s most famous vinous export, this leading producer is well-versed in producing fascinating whites from Fiano and Verdeca. It is with the poetically titled Elegia that the extraordinary levels of quality come to light. Made from old bush vines up to 50 years old, it is notable for its intense dark berry fruit with wonderful balsamic end notes and excellent balance.
Viticulture
The wine is produced from 100% Primitivo sourced from 50‑year‑old vines trained in alberello (bush vine) and espalier systems. The harvest takes place at the end of September, allowing the grapes to become naturally very high in sugar while maintaining enough acidity for balance, with low yields averaging 40 quintals per hectare (4,000 kg)
Winemaking
Once harvested by hand, the grapes are gently crushed and fermented. Fermentation occurs with extended maceration on the skins to extract deep colour, aromas and structure and is thermo‑controlled alcoholic fermentation at 22–24°C. Crucially, the fermentation is intentionally stopped before all the sugars are converted into alcohol before being aged in stainless steel and bottle.
Tasting Note
A big, rich and deeply satisfying appassimento-style Sicilian red, packed with lashings of ripe blackberry, cherry compote and dark berry fruit. The palate is rich, generous and velvety, with a gentle touch of sweet fruit adding roundness and plush appeal. Supple tannins give a smooth, comforting texture, while the Nero d’Avola brings depth, Perricone adds savoury richness, and Frappato lifts the blend with juicy red-fruit brightness. Full-flavoured, soft and highly drinkable, this is a crowd-pleasing Riserva with warmth, richness and plenty of Sicilian charm.

Ideal pairings include spiced tart with strawberry jam, dry pastries, and blue cheeses.
