Pierre Gaillard, Syrah Terres de Mandrin, IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, Saint Joseph, Rhône, France, 2021

Viticulture
The grapes for this wine are sourced from several plots across the Collines Rhodaniennes region, including Marsaz, Colombier-le-Vieux, Charnas, and Malleval. The vineyards are situated on soils composed of rolled pebbles and granite sands, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wine's minerality. The vines are cultivated using sustainable practices, focusing on manual labour and minimal intervention to preserve the integrity of the terroir.
Winemaking
Upon reaching optimal ripeness, the Syrah grapes are harvested both manually and mechanically. They undergo a cold pre-fermentation maceration to extract color and aromas gently. Fermentation occurs at temperatures around 25°C, followed by post-fermentation maceration at approximately 30°C. The wine is then aged for 12 months in wooden barrels, allowing for moderate oxygenation that supports the aromatic profile while maintaining freshness.
Tasting Note
This Syrah presents a vibrant ruby-red hue with raspberry highlights. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of red and black fruits, complemented by subtle smoky and spicy notes. On the palate, it is juicy and fresh, with a smooth texture and a crisp finish that showcases its elegant structure. The wine maintains the classic peppery and floral characteristics typical of Northern Rhône Syrah, delivering a delightful balance of fruitiness and spice.
