Zaccagnini, Verdicchio di Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore, Segnavento, Marche, Italy, 2024

Producer Profile
On the opposite coast to Tuscany in the east of Italy lies the less well known, but no less beautiful, region of Marche.
This is where you will find the family run Zaccagnini winery, established by two brothers. Playing to their strengths, they have focused on the local grape Verdicchio – and the results are spectacular. Zaccagnini’s range of benchmark Verdicchios are as distinctive and individual as you could wish for, each wine possessing its own personality and textural signature.
Viticulture
The grapes are sourced from vineyards on the western slope of the estate, facing inland. Nestled in a natural amphitheatre, these vineyards benefit from a distinctive microclimate, with steady ventilation and shelter from extreme weather. The soil is a blend of clay and sand. Covering 30 hectares, all certified organic, the vineyards encircle the winery — their proximity allowing the grapes to be processed immediately after harvest. Only manual harvesting is practised, ensuring the fruit arrives intact and fresh. Around 70% of the vineyards are planted with Verdicchio, with the remaining 30% dedicated to Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Passerina, and Pecorino.
Winemaking
Zaccagnini works exclusively with clones of native grape varieties from its own region, constantly exploring and refining them. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand. Gentle pressing and low-temperature fermentation take place in glass-lined concrete tanks. Every stage of production, including bottling, is completed in-house at the winery.
Tasting Note
An elegant wine, notes of acacia and of wildflowers, the mouth is an intense medley of apples, lemons, stone fruits, herbs and nuts and has a long-lasting finish.
