Producer Profile

Located on the ‘Butte de Chaume’, one of the most beautiful and only 1er Cru classified terroirs of Anjou, this vineyard has been run organically and biodynamically since 1995.

Though the soils of Chaume are known for their delectable, sweet wines, Guy Rochais was the first to create a dry white: the famous ‘Chaume sec de Guy Rochais’. In fact, his creation earned him a penalty fine for non-compliance with the AOC body, causing him to re-christen it ‘The Insolent’. After 60 years at the helm of Château de Plaisance, the Rochais family have now sold the estate to young winemaker Vanessa Cherruau. Born and trained in Angers, she has learned her winemaking skills both in France and abroad. Vanessa’s first visit to the terroirs of the Château de Plaisance was literally ‘love at first sight’ and in 2019 her very first vintage at Chateau de Plaisance was released.

Viticulture

The Zerzilles cuvée comes from a small 0.6ha parcel situated on the eastern slope of the Butte de Chaume in Anjou. The vineyard is planted on schist and sandstone soils, contributing to the wine’s distinctive mineral profile. Vines are over 50 years old, naturally limiting yields and enhancing concentration. The estate has been farmed organically since 1995 and biodynamically since 2008, promoting soil health and vineyard biodiversity. All fruit is hand-harvested to ensure optimal selection and quality.

Winemaking

Grapes undergo slow, cold pressing to preserve purity and aromatics. Fermentation is followed by ageing for approximately 14 months, including around 10 months in oak barrels, which adds texture without overpowering the fruit. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally and may be partial or complete depending on the vintage, helping balance acidity and structure. The result is a wine with both power and finesse, capable of extended ageing.

Tasting Note

A powerful yet finely poised Chenin Blanc showing vibrant energy and precision. Layers of orchard fruit, citrus and subtle spice are underpinned by a mineral backbone from its schist and sandstone soils. The palate is concentrated yet fresh, with a gentle oak influence adding texture and complexity, leading to a long, structured finish built for ageing.

Food matching

Ideal with sea bass in escabeche, sesame-accented dishes, or Asian-inspired plates such as pak choi. Also pairs well with delicate seafood and lightly spiced cuisine.
