Producer Profile

Founded in 1994 by Vagelis Chatzivaritis, the Chatzivaritis Estate is located in the heart of Goumenissa, Macedonia, Greece.

The winery spans 20 hectares of organically farmed vineyards across the regions of Bindabla, Filyria, Plagia, Pentalofos, and Griva. The estate cultivates indigenous Greek grape varieties such as Xinomavro, Negoska, Roditis, Malagousia, Muscat, and Assyrtiko, while also growing small plots of international varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2017, Vagelis’ daughter Chloi returned to Greece after winemaking studies in France and Portugal. She brought with her a modern, low-intervention philosophy, introducing natural winemaking techniques, including pétillant naturel and carbonic maceration.

Viticulture

Sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Plagia in Goumenissa on medium textured sandy clay soil and from favorable climatic conditions that promote slow and even ripening. The vineyards are managed with a focus on sustainability and minimal intervention, soon to embrace biodynamic practices, ensuring healthy vines and grapes that truly reflect their terroir.

Winemaking

Produced using a distinctive winemaking approach that combines carbonic maceration with the blending of grapes harvested at two different ripeness levels. Grapes are harvested carefully hand selected and crushed before being allowed to go through spontaneous fermentation in INOX tanks, without additives, fining or filtration and with very low sulphur content added before bottling. The early harvested grapes undergo skin maceration for 5 days while the late harvested ones for 3 weeks. Following fermentation, the skins are lightly pressed, and the wine is aged in separate French oak barrels for an additional 4 months. After aging, the 2 harvests are blended resulting in this balanced red wine.

Tasting Note

SPIN is a vibrant red wine crafted exclusively from Negoska, a native Greek grape variety from the Goumenissa region. The wine showcases an intense pomegranate color and a lively aromatic profile featuring red berries, cherries, subtle cinnamon, and herbal undertones. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of fresh acidity and smooth tannins, culminating in a persistent, elegant finish. This wine captures the spirit of traditional Greek winemaking while embracing modern, low-intervention techniques for a natural and expressive character.
