Producer Profile

François’ empire keeps growing, but he still keeps a tight reign on the operations, whilst being open to sharing his knowledge and passion for his region.

The recently expanded winery perched above Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône, once modest in size, is now brimming with vats and barrels—yet the exceptional quality remains unwavering. François Villard’s distinguished estate, founded in 1989 by the former chef turned winemaker, has grown to encompass over 40 hectares of vineyards, alongside an additional 25 hectares sourced from trusted growers. Producing around 450,000 bottles annually, the domaine offers a diverse portfolio of 23 cuvées from some of the northern Rhône Valley’s most celebrated appellations, including Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas, and Saint-Péray. These wines regularly grace the tables of top restaurants worldwide, a testament to their enduring excellence.

Viticulture

This Syrah originates from carefully selected parcels in Ampuis and Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, including notable localities such as Le Plomb, Côte Bodin, Le Grand Taillis, Fontjean, Servonnière, and Mont. The vines, averaging 20 years of age, are planted on soils composed of decomposed quartz schists—classic for the northern Rhône—bringing a mineral-driven finesse and depth to the wine. This unique terroir, combined with precise viticulture, produces Syrah of exceptional purity, structure, and aromatic complexity.

Winemaking

100% whole clusters are macerated for 13 days in open wood and stainless steel tank. 18 months of aging in oak barrels, 20% of which is new oak.

Tasting Note

Deep ruby-purple in colour, this wine opens with vibrant aromas of black cherry, blueberry, and hints of violet, olive tapenade, and spice. The palate is smooth and concentrated, delivering dark berry, cola, and subtle liquorice notes with a touch of floral lift. Polished tannins and a spicy, persistent finish complete this elegant, finely balanced Syrah.

Food Matching

Grilled rib-eye, herb-crusted lamb, or game dishes such as venison
