Le Clos du Caillou, Côtes du Rhône Rouge, Le Caillou, Southern Rhône, France, 2023

Producer Profile
The quality of the estate's wines has greatly progressed over the past couple of decades and are often recognised as one of the best in the appellation. The unsung hero in Le Clos du Caillou's portfolio is the ‘Bouquet des Garrigues’: with a feel and style of Châteauneuf du Pape, it is not a straightforward Côtes du Rhône by any means.
Sylvie Vacheron, helped by the gifted Bruno Gaspard, is producing rich and very expressive Châteauneuf du Pape cuvées. Viticulture
From organically farmed vineyards bordering Châteauneuf-du-Pape, planted on sandy soils that enhance finesse. Low yields and meticulous vineyard work ensure concentration, while hand harvesting preserves fruit integrity.
Winemaking
A classic blend of Grenache with a touch of Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Fermentation with native yeasts in concrete tanks, followed by gentle ageing in large old foudres and stainless steel to retain brightness and texture, without oak influence.
Tasting Note
Juicy and expressive, this Rhône red bursts with aromas of black cherry, wild raspberry, and crushed herbs, lifted by hints of liquorice and garrigue. The palate is supple and rounded, with soft tannins, vibrant fruit, and a peppery, fresh finish.
Food Matching
Lamb merguez sausages, ratatouille with black olives, or chargrilled aubergine with tahini.
