Philippe Alliet, Chinon Rouge, Touraine, Loire, France, 2023

Producer Profile
We are thrilled to work with Philippe Alliet, one of the icons of the Loire Valley.
It’s a real privilege to be able to source these highly sought after wines, which originate from his small 17 hectares estate in Cravant-les-Côteaux, the location of some of the finest Cabernet Franc vineyards in the Loire. Inspired by his love for top Bordeaux, Philippe’s goal is to make wines that share the same concentration, density and power using low yields, optimally ripe fruit and full destemming of the grapes. All of his cuvées show great purity and balance and we are convinced that they have the ability to age for a decade or more.
Viticulture
Domaine Philippe Alliet's 19 hectares of organically farmed vineyards benefit from Chinon's diverse soils. These range from the gravel and sand on the alluvial terraces alongside the Vienne River, to the limestone and yellow Tuffeau on the hillsides, and the flinty clays and sands found on the plateau. This varied terroir plays a key role in shaping the distinct character of the Domaine's wines. Philippe Alliet is a staunch advocate for organic viticulture, his philosophy centres on minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to express itself naturally.
Winemaking
A long maceration with gentle punch-downs slowly extracts flavour and tannins. The resulting wines are then aged for up to 18 months in a combination of barrels and tanks, with minimal new oak influence (now using only 20% new 500L barrels, down from 100% new 225L barrels). This approach balances early approachability with long-term ageing potential. The wines benefit from the naturally temperature-controlled environment of the ancient cellars carved into the Tuffeau hillsides. Aged for up to 18 months in a combination of barrels and tanks, with minimal new oak influence.
Tasting Note
This Chinon offers a bright ruby‑red hue with violet highlights. The nose reveals ripe dark berries—cherry and blackcurrant—with liquorice, cedar, and subtle pepper notes. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, rounded and structured, featuring elegant, supple tannins, refreshing acidity, and a clean, savoury finish.
Food Matching
Grilled meats, charcuterie, roast lamb, and game. Elegant enough for poultry or mushroom dishes, and lovely with medium-aged cheeses.
