Raising the bar: IWSC Sommelier of the Year 2025
Last Tuesday in London, the IWSC Sommelier of the Year competition was a timely reminder of the skill, precision, and deep hospitality at the heart of the sommelier profession.
Watching the finalists work the floor - navigating blind tastings, pairing challenges, and showcasing exceptional service skills - was equal parts thrilling and humbling. These are the professionals that embody where confidence meets humility, knowledge meets instinct, and every decision is made with the guest in mind. It’s not about showing off; it’s about tuning in.
This prestigious event has long celebrated the talents and expertise of Sommeliers across the UK, committing to fostering excellence and education within the wine, spirits, and hospitality industries. At Alliance Wine, we firmly believe in the value of nurturing talent and supporting those working at the pinnacle of service.
Matt Wilkin MS, Director of Prestige Sales, UK Sommelier of the Year 2005, and long-standing judge at the event, reflected on the day:
“It’s such a pleasure working on this competition. The calibre of previous winners, the organisers, the Judges and Master Sommeliers involved are a true inspiration to the younger generation, and I’m incredibly grateful for everyone’s dedication and voluntary commitment.
The final was fantastic, and it was so inspiring to see such talented individuals over the two days, whether they were first-time competitors or returning candidates. It’s always a privilege to follow their journey and see them grow year after year.”
We’re proud to be part of the UK Sommelier Association family and support the sommelier community - from those just getting their bearings to those stepping up to lead wine programs. The competition this week was a celebration of that journey: of the craft, the graft, and the commitment it takes to turn a passion into a profession.
Congratulations to all the finalists and to everyone working to keep the role of the sommelier alive, respected, and grounded in service.
