Baglio Gibellina, Miraggio Sicilia Riserva, DOC Sicily, Italy, 2019
Producer Profile
The ancient, largely unchanged land of Sicily is reflected in the wines of Baglio Gibellina.
‘Baglio’ refers to the property’s original internal courtyard, surrounded by a series of old warehouses that were once used for the collection and processing of grapes. Dominating its valley location, the property is flanked by the hills of Salemi and Santa Ninfa in a landscape marked by rolling vineyards punctuated by clusters of broom and prickly pear. The old vines are planted between 300 and 600m above sea level on a mixture of clay and volcanic soils, resulting in wines that encapsulate ancient family traditions, with authenticity, immense charm and easy-drinking appeal.
Viticulture
Nero d'Avola offers a pleasant ruby red colour. Perricone is a native grape variety that exudes a complex range of spices, with juniper and black pepper being the main components. Frappato is an ancient black grape variety native to Sicily, whose precise origins are still unknown, this variety gives a fruity, saline characteristic to the wine.
Winemaking
The approach celebrates authenticity and gentle craftsmanship, letting the natural beauty of Sicilian terroir and its native grapes shine clearly, with no need for heavy oak or intensive winery trickery.
Tasting Note
The wine presents a deep, intense ruby-red colour. Its bouquet is distinctive and pronounced, offering hints of dried fruit. On the palate, it is warm and full-bodied, with a well-balanced acidity and soft, elegant tannins that lend harmony and finesse to the finish.
