Domaine Bachey Legros, Santenay Rouge, Clos des Hates Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy, France, 2024
Producer Profile
The success of this domaine stems from its incredible stock of old vines, producing small yields that offer perfect grape ripeness and concentration while being deeply anchored in their rootstocks.
The resulting wines offer power and elegance in equal measure and come from a legacy of generational winemaking that dates from the 19th century.
Viticulture
‘Les Hâtes’ is one of the best terroirs in Santenay village; this appellation is so close to a premier cru! The vines are protected, and the soils suffer little erosion, on well-drained and gently sloping limestone soils. If this terroir has retained all its integrity, the old vines, planted in 1935. Naturally powerful, with their vinification style favouring roundness and purity of fruit, hence gentle handling and extraction are de rigueur.
Winemaking
Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, followed by gentle pressing. Careful selection of the cuvée ensures only the best juice is used. Cold pre-fermentation maceration (4 days), alcoholic fermentation (11 days), post-fermentation maceration (10 days). Ageing takes place in French oak barrels for up to 14 months, 12 in barrels on lees without racking with 25% new, to add complexity and texture. The wine is further aged on its lees for 2 months in vats, enhancing richness and depth.
Tasting Note
This Pinot Noir from Domaine Bachey-Legros shows aromas of red fruit like cherry and raspberry, blackberry and currant and hints of earth and spice. The fruit flavours should carry through, joined by a lovely acidity, velvety tannins and a long finish.
Food matching
Paté, Crab, Sushi and Chicken in a creamy sauce.

Jancis Robinson 16+/20
The vines here are surrounded by Santenay premier cru vineyards. 25% new oak. Bottled in December. Deep colour, needs some time in bottle – certainly has potential. Briary, cherry, blackberry fruit, bright acidity, supple oak and fine tannins. May well be a bargain in the context of Côte d'Or wines. 16.5+, AWH, Jan 2026.
