Domaine Darviot-Perrin, Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, 1er Cru, Les Bondues, Burgundy, France, 2023

Producer Profile

Domaine Darviot-Perrin was established in 1989 by Didier Darviot and Geneviève Perrin, merging the estates of Pierre Perrin-Ponsot and Henri-Jean Darviot.

Geneviève’s father, Pierre Perrin, was a renowned figure in Meursault and Volnay winemaking circles. The domaine spans 11ha across a clutch of prestigious Burgundy communes, including Meursault, Volnay, Chassagne-Montrachet, Monthelie, Pommard and Beaune. In 2019, Didier’s son, Pierre-Antonin Darviot, took over the winemaking duties after a distinguished career in the French Foreign Office. He is the 10th generation of the family to lead the estate and has since transitioned the domaine to certified organic farming, with certification achieved in 2022.

Viticulture

Domaine Darviot-Perrin practices biodynamic viticulture, incorporating natural herbal teas and organic compost to enhance soil health and vine vitality. The estate's vineyards are ploughed to a minimum, and no insecticides or weedkillers are used. The average age of the Bondues 1er cru is 60 years and some of the other vineyards exceeding 90 years, contributing to low yields and concentrated fruit. Hand-harvesting ensures only the best grapes reach the cellar, maintaining the integrity of the fruit.

Winemaking

The grapes were 100% destemmed, cold soak maceration for 5 days and strong aeration before going into barrel (15% new oak) for 12 months and a further 7 months in tank with no fining or filtering. Fermentation occurs with gentle extraction techniques pumping over rather punch downs, maintaining low temperatures to preserve the fruit's purity.

Tasting Note

On the nose you have aromas of cherry and raspberry but also hibiscus. The premier cru Les Bondue's has a voluptuous texture and subtle structure showcasing the elegance of Chassagne reds.

Food Matching

A fine match for red meats or slow-cooked dishes, it will appeal to all who appreciate classic Burgundy.
