Equipo Navazos, La Bota No 137 Palo Cortado " Navazos", Jerez, Spain

Producer Profile

Equipo Navazos was born out of a group of friends’ desire to unearth some of the many treasures lying forgotten in the bodegas of Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, El Puerto de Santa Maria and Montilla… wines whose age and provenance place them among the best value in the world.

These unexpected yet fortunate findings have been made available to wine lovers around the world in limited quantities under the La Bota series (consecutively numbered editions, with the date of each ‘saca’, or withdrawal, on the label) as a mark of respect for the generations of expertise and care that have gone into making these exceptional wines. Today, however, Equipo Navazos’ efforts are increasingly focused on producing their own wines, such as Florpower, which truly express the character of Sanlúcar and its unique terroir. Beyond Andalusia, they have also collaborated with winemakers of the calibre of Dirk Niepoort and Sergi Colet to develop authentic, individual Spanish wines that never fail to impress.

Viticulture

Produced from Palomino Fino sourced exclusively from Pago Miraflores La Baja in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The fruit comes from two exceptional old-vine parcels, one over 50 years old and the other more than 80 years old. Situated close to the Atlantic, these vineyards benefit from maritime influences and albariza soils that contribute freshness, mineral character and the distinctive saline qualities that define the finest wines of Sanlúcar.

Winemaking

This single-vineyard, vintage Palo Cortado originates from grapes harvested in 2010 from the same old-vine sites used for the acclaimed La Bota de Florpower series. Following fermentation, the wine received only minimal and incidental biological ageing before fortification to 17.5% ABV. It was then matured oxidatively for almost sixteen years in a combination of traditional Sherry butts and carefully topped-up 225-litre barrels, reducing excessive oxidation and preserving balance and finesse. Selected from the most elegant and delicate casks, the final wine was bottled at 18% ABV, offering remarkable complexity, purity and drinkability.

Tasting Note

Golden amber colour, toffee and orange peel aromas that repeat in the palate together with nutty and fruity notes. A flat out delicious wine, to drink in a quality white wine glass. Perfectly versatile as a match and feels light despite the 18% alcohol, something one would hardly guess. Epic.

Food matching

A superb partner for Asian cuisine, particularly dishes featuring aromatic spices, umami and subtle sweetness. Try with miso-glazed black cod, duck pancakes, Korean barbecue.
