Thomas Morey, Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy, France, 2022

Producer Profile
The rigorously talented Thomas Morey, younger son of Bernard, has set up his cellar in the old family house in Chassagne-Montrachet, he represents the tenth generation of the Morey family in Chassagne-Montrachet.
Diligent, serious, a hardworking perfectionist, he has renovated the winery into a very clean and organised operative. He works around 13 hectares diligently and skilfully, having already established himself as one of the stars of the appellation. His style is different from that of his father, proving to be more linear and tauter with more initial restraint which is closer to the modern idiom of fine white Burgundy.
Viticulture
he grapes come from old-vine parcels planted in the 1950s–60s in Chassagne‑Montrachet, farmed organically since 2014 and certified in 2017. The vines thrive on clay-limestone soils that provide structure and freshness. Managed with minimal intervention, the vineyards benefit from spontaneous fermentation and low sulphur use, mirroring the Morey family’s biodynamic spirit.
Winemaking
After hand harvesting and destemming, the Pinot Noir undergoes wild-yeast fermentation, followed by aging in 228 L barrels for around 15 months (approximately 20% new oak), then further maturation in tank before bottling without fining or filtration.
Tasting Note
This red Burgundy, sourced from century-old Pinot Noir vines, displays a glimmering ruby-red color and an elegantly fragrant nose of ripe red berries, violets, and forest undergrowth. On the palate, it is both concentrated and structured, with silky, well-integrated tannins and lively acidity, delivering a weighty yet graceful “chewy” texture.
