Thomas Morey, Santenay Rouge, Vieilles Vignes, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France, 2020

Producer Profile
The rigorously talented Thomas Morey, younger son of Bernard, has set up his cellar in the old family house in Chassagne-Montrachet, he represents the tenth generation of the Morey family in Chassagne-Montrachet.
Diligent, serious, a hardworking perfectionist, he has renovated the winery into a very clean and organised operative. He works around 13 hectares diligently and skilfully, having already established himself as one of the stars of the appellation. His style is different from that of his father, proving to be more linear and tauter with more initial restraint which is closer to the modern idiom of fine white Burgundy.
Viticulture
Santenay ‘Vieilles Vignes’ comes from the plot named "Prorons Dessus," with some vines planted as early as the late 1950s. The Santenay village appellation covers 180 hectares of vineyards scattered across slopes around the village, at elevations between 220 and 400 metres. The stony brown limestone soils here are similar to those of the Côte de Nuits, which begin to reappear south of Chassagne-Montrachet and are typical in Santenay. The soil on this gently sloping site is light, shallow brown limestone, ideal for vine growing. This plot benefits from excellent exposure, situated just below the renowned "Clos de Tavannes," a prized Premier Cru in Santenay.
Winemaking
Only indigenous yeasts are used, with no sulphur added during vinification. Apart from this, traditional Burgundian winemaking methods are followed. The wines undergo very gentle filtration. Maturation takes place in 30-50% new oak for up to 12 months, with light filtration at bottling.
Tasting Note
A ruby colour with aromas of ripe red fruits, including cherries and raspberries, complemented by earthy undertones and subtle rose petals. The palate is smooth and well-balanced, featuring fine-grained tannins and a lingering finish. This wine reflects the estate's commitment to quality and terroir expression.
Food Matching
Ideal with grilled red meats such as beef or lamb, as well as game dishes. It also pairs well with poultry and veal.
