Artelium Motley Wild, East Sussex, England, 2023
Producer Profile
Curators, collaborators and custodians of English winemaking, art and nature, Artelium is a boutique estate in the heart of East Sussex crafting exceptional English still and sparkling wines.
Founded by Mark Collins and Julie Bretland in 2020, it is the embodiment of a long-held vision to create a space for people to come together and enjoy wine and art in a beautiful natural setting. The area has a proud heritage of artisans, which Mark and Julie wanted to celebrate by being a hub for artistic expression and innovative winemaking. Artelium sees each vintage as an opportunity to create pioneering styles of wine that will shape the future of the industry.
Viticulture
Combe Bottom, home to the Pinot Gris, sits in a sheltered hollow where cool air slows ripening and helps preserve the grape’s bright acidity, with chalk‑loam soils giving the fruit lifted aromatics and gentle texture. The Streat plots offer a contrasting profile: the Pinot Meunier section sits on slightly exposed clay‑with‑flint that warms quickly and benefits from steady airflow, producing lively, red‑fruited berries ideal for sparkling bases, while the higher Streat Chardonnay parcel rests on more pronounced chalk, yielding clean, citrus‑led fruit with a distinctive mineral line. Together, the three sites form a compact landscape where each variety naturally thrives in its ideal conditions.
Winemaking
Naturally fermented blend of Chardonnay, Meunier and Pinot Gris in stainless steel, with no additions. Aged on fine lees with battonage twice monthly for six months.
Tasting Note
A fresh, elegant and thoughtful wild ferment from equal parts Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris. This wine has an expression of mixed creamy layers of red fruits and yellow stone fruit, such as bright red strawberries, young cherries, freshly cut mango and ripening banana. Medium refreshing acidity with medium body with generous midpalate texture.
