Domaine Phillipe Bouzereau, Meursault, Vieux Clos du Château de Citeaux, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France, 2023

Producer Profile
Philippe Bouzereau is the 9th generation of a family of vine-growers in Meursault.
Following on from his father he took responsibility for the management of this fine 18 hectare Domaine back in 2006, helped by his brother Charles. With the well-being of the vineyards at heart, his team practice minimum intervention to enable the vines to develop naturally and healthily. His emblematic wine is the 1.7ha monopole Meursault ‘Vieux Clos du Château de Cîteaux’, produced from a single parcel of vines planted by his father.
Viticulture
This prestigious Meursault comes from a single plot of vines within the Vieux Clos du Château de Cîteaux climate. The vines are planted on a deep, stony soil composed of limestone and clay. The terroir benefits from excellent exposure to sunlight, ensuring optimal grape ripening.
Winemaking
The winemaking process at Domaine Philippe Bouzereau is very meticulous. Grapes are carefully harvested by hand and undergo a gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts, preserving the natural character of the fruit. Malolactic fermentation is allowed to occur, adding complexity and texture to the wine. The wine matures in oak barrels for a period of time, typically 12 months. The oak adds subtle flavours and complexity without overpowering the delicate fruit.
Tasting Note
This is classic Meursault with a noble bearing. Pale gold in the glass, the wine opens with lifted aromas of baked apple, ripe pear, lemon curd, and toasted hazelnut, alongside subtle notes of vanilla, warm brioche, and crushed seashells. On the palate, it is rich and rounded yet finely tuned, with creamy texture, integrated oak, and vibrant acidity lending poise to its generous fruit. The finish is long and mouthcoating, echoing with minerality, citrus oil, and roasted almond. A harmonious and expressive Chardonnay from an exceptional walled vineyard.
Food Matching
This luxurious white Burgundy calls for equally elegant yet comforting cuisine. Think lobster thermidor, or truffle roast chicken with creamy morel sauce.
