Producer Profile

Domaine Tortochot is a renowned family estate currently led by fourth-generation winemaker Chantal Tortochot, who took over from her father in the late 1990s.

The domaine manages 12 hectares of vineyards divided into 34 distinct parcels, including prestigious Grand Cru sites such as Chambertin (the vineyard’s northernmost section), Mazis-Chambertin, and Charmes-Chambertin. It also owns highly regarded Premier Cru plots, including vines in Lavaux Saint-Jacques adjacent to the famed Clos Saint-Jacques. Known for producing traditional-style Gevrey wines, Chantal’s wines are celebrated for their chiselled fruit, structured tannins, and bright acidity, reflecting true Burgundian character. The Premier Crus showcase terroir-driven styles: Lavaux Saint-Jacques offers deep garnet color with fine cherry and earthy aromas; Champeaux is more floral and fruity, with notes of cherry and rose, displaying elegant length; Charmes combines spicy, smokey aromas with rich red fruit on the palate. Among the Grand Crus, Mazis-Chambertin stands out with rich fruit, liquorice notes, and strong yet elegant tannins, promising excellent aging potential. The domaine also holds a small parcel in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, producing wines with dark berry aromas and earthy underbrush nuances.

Viticulture

The estate comprises 12 hectares of vines spread across 34 separate parcels, with vines averaging 60 years old. It includes some of Burgundy’s most prestigious sites, featuring plots in the Grands Crus of Chambertin (in its northernmost section), Mazis-Chambertin, and Charmes-Chambertin, as well as well-situated Premier Crus such as the rows in Lavaux Saint-Jacques, which border the renowned Clos Saint-Jacques. Chantal produces traditional-style Gevrey wines, characterised by finely chiselled fruit, structured tannins, and bright acidity — wines with true elegance and style.

Winemaking

The grapes are fully destemmed, with fermentation temperatures carefully controlled before the wine is transferred to medium-toast oak barrels for ageing, where malolactic fermentation takes place. Domaine Tortochot prioritises natural methods, avoiding chemical additives, as winemaker Chantal Tortochot is committed to preserving the soil’s natural balance. Maturation occurs in oak barrels over a 15 to 18-month period.

Tasting Note

This wine shows a brilliant garnet colour with an intense bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of forest floor. The palate is vibrant and lively, offering fine tannins and bright acidity that provide excellent structure and a clean, persistent finish.

Food Matching

Pairs beautifully with dishes like roast duck with cherry sauce, mushroom risotto, or a rich beef bourguignon. It also complements soft cheeses such as Brie or Camembert.
