Confuron Cotetidot, Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy, France, 2022
Producer Profile
Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot is a distinguished family-run winery located in Vosne-Romanée, at the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits.
Established in 1964 through the union of the Confuron and Cotetidot families – both with deep-rooted viticultural traditions dating back to the 17th century – the estate now spans approximately 11ha of esteemed vineyards, including Grand Cru, Premier Cru and Village appellations.
Viticulture
Domaine Confuron‑Cotetidot farms approximately 11 hectares across the Côte de Nuits, with the Bourgogne Rouge sourced exclusively from the domaine’s own vineyards rather than purchased fruit. The vines are predominantly old, massal‑selection Pinot Noir, contributing naturally low yields and concentration. Vineyard work follows organic principles without certification, with the estate avoiding synthetic herbicides and pesticides in favour of regular ploughing and meticulous canopy management. Pruning is short, occasional green harvesting is employed, and yields are typically kept low to moderate. Harvesting is carried out relatively late, allowing full phenolic ripeness, including ripe stems suitable for whole‑cluster fermentation.
Winemaking
In common with the estate’s wider philosophy, the Bourgogne Rouge is vinified with a high proportion of whole bunches, often close to 100%, depending on vintage conditions. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts, followed by long cuvaisons of roughly two to three weeks to build structure and aromatic complexity. The wine is then raised in French oak barrels for an extended period, generally up to 18–24 months, with only a modest proportion of new oak used for this regional cuvée. Bottling is carried out without fining or filtration, preserving texture and aromatic detail.
Tasting Note
A clear, mid‑ruby colour. The nose is open and expressive, showing red and black cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, layered with notes of dried herbs, spice, and subtle savoury nuances from whole‑bunch fermentation. On the palate, the wine is textural and structured, with fine but assertive tannins, fresh acidity, and a mineral core typical of the Côte de Nuits. The finish is long and faintly spicy, suggesting excellent suitability at the table and the ability to develop further complexity over the short to medium term.
Food matching
Roast chicken or guinea fowl, particularly with herbs such as thyme or tarragon. Soft and semi‑soft cheeses, such as Brie, Chaource or young Comté.
